How do I know if my property needs repointing?

Signs include crumbling mortar, gaps between bricks, damp patches, blown bricks or visible cracking. If mortar can be scraped out easily with a key or screwdriver, it’s time for repointing.

Why use lime mortar instead of cement?

Lime allows buildings to breathe. Cement traps moisture, causing bricks to crack, spall or fail over time. Lime is flexible, breathable and the correct choice for most older properties.

How deep do you rake out the joints?

We rake out no less than 25mm on every job. This ensures a solid bond, correct mortar coverage and a durable finish. Shallow repointing fails quickly — proper depth is essential for long-lasting work.

Do you repoint in winter?

Yes, but only using winter-safe mixes and with protection such as hessian and sheeting. We follow temperature guidelines to keep the mortar curing correctly.

How long does a full property repoint take?

It depends on access and condition, but on average we complete around 8–20 m² per day depending on obstacles, weather and depth of required rake-out.
